有不少托福考生應(yīng)該都在被這個問題困擾著：為什么我單詞沒少背，實際在做托福閱讀的時候還是讀不懂文章呢？句子中明明沒出現(xiàn)難詞、專有名詞，還是不能理解句子意思？

確實，托?？荚?/a>中總會遇到一些詞，它們非常常見、簡單，但放到句子中卻不能直接套用常見詞意，結(jié)合上下文，了解一詞多意才能正確理解文章意思。

比如“and”這個詞，你會想這么常見并且簡單的詞，我還會理解錯？我們先來看一下TPO7 The Geologic History of the Mediterranean的片段:

As a result of crustal adjustments and faulting, the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean now connects to the Atlantic, opened, and water cascaded spectacularly back into the Mediterranean. 

實際上還可理解為“因此、所以”，只要看出這里“and”左右兩邊的事情不是同時發(fā)生，所以并不能理解為“并且”，and實際上還可理解為“因此、所以”

01，suggest
 
在托福里，真的很少見到“建議”這種說法，倒是往往與下結(jié)論有關(guān)，可理解為“表明”。

02，complex
 
這個詞還有“建筑群”的意思，但很多考生會誤解為“復(fù)雜”。

It had over 2,000 apartment complexes, a great market, a large number of industrial workshops, an administrative center, a number of massive religious edifices…

03，largely
 
有多少人看到后第一反應(yīng)是“大”，需要結(jié)合上下文后理解為“在很大程度上”。

04，game
 
大部分托福初學(xué)者都會忽略這個詞還有“野生獵物”的意思，所以非常容易誤解句意。

They had experienced great difficulty finding game west of the Rockies and not until the second of December did they kill their first elk.

05，evenly
 
這個詞和“甚至”毫無關(guān)系，因為“甚至”對應(yīng)的“even”本來就是個副詞，不能再加“-ly”了，evenly在托福閱讀里有“均勻地”意思。

06，in turn
 
字典里的意思是“反過來”,實際上結(jié)合上下文也可以理解為“接著會…（發(fā)生）…”

07，readily
 
很多時候考察的是“容易地”意思，并非和“準(zhǔn)備”有關(guān)。

The  release of heat energy is retarded by the tall vertical city walls that do not allow infrared radiation to escape as readily asdoes the relatively level surface of the surrounding countryside.

08，mine
 
mine還有“礦”的意思，這個一定要記清楚哦。

This scenario begins with the planting of hyperaccumulating species in the target area, such as an abandoned mine or an irrigation pond contaminated by run off.

09，considerable
 
單詞書里常見的“值得考慮的”這個意思，在托?？荚囍泻苌倏嫉?，反而“相當(dāng)大的”、“相當(dāng)多的”考察的次數(shù)更多。

10，impact
 
除了“影響”外，“沖擊、撞擊”的詞意也要一起掌握。

In view of these facts, scientists hypothesized that a single large asteroid, about 10 to 15 kilometers across, collided with Earth, and the resulting fallout created the boundary clay. Their calculations show that the impact kicked up a dust cloud that cut off sunlight for several months, inhibiting photosynthesis in plants; decreased surface temperatures on continents to below freezing…

11，critical
 
如果你硬背詞匯書，恐怕并太清楚這個詞還有“重要的”這個釋義，在考試中也是挺常見的。

First, primary groups are critical to the socialization process. Within them, infants and children are introduced to the ways of their society.

12，edge
 
大部分考生都會掌握“邊緣”這個意思，“（微弱的）優(yōu)勢”這個詞意不太多見，但也建議要了解一下。

It seems likely that Teotihuacán’s natural resources, along with the city elite’s ability to recognize their potential, gave the city a competitive edge over its neighbors. Thevalley, like many other places in Mexican and Guatemalan highlands, was rich in obsidian.

不能直接翻譯為“收集地”，因為這個詞還有“共同地”這個釋義，考試中也是比較常見的，一定要結(jié)合上下文進行理解。
